We arrived back home in Castlemaine
late in the afternoon of Sunday 27th August.
As so often happens, we felt we'd got to the
point to run for home. This feeling was
accentuated by the fact that Bourke is in
the outback - and there are no other towns
terribly close to it. Also that the weekend
was due, and most small country towns close
down at midday Saturday, reopening on Monday
morning. I can't blame them, but it makes
for little to do there.
We were heading due south to get back to
Castlemaine - it is almost a straight line;
a long
straight line. It was the best part of 3
hours drive down to Cobar, which was a town
we liked. It is based on mining and seemed a
lot more vibrant than Bourke.
Then down over the flat featureless Hay
Plains (though they did have a lovely
billabong where we spent the night) and back
into Victoria - much greener than the places
we've been, and with much bigger trees.
And home.
