Our
expected bus trip across Arnhem Land
continued by plane; until
all the roads were open, bus
travel was not possible. So we got quite
used to being taken to the airstrip, loading
our bags in one of the pair of planes there,
getting into the same seats we always sat
in, and flying off to the next stop. Not
seeing the country from the road, but
getting very good aerial views; and in some
places good views from the road anyway, when
the airstrip was a reasonable distance from
the "camp".
"Camp"? They were often called a camp, but
they were in general very luxurious with
excellent food, and everything provided. if
you wanted a piece of fruit; or a bag of
chips; or a muesli bar;
or a beer, or a wine - all you needed to do
was either pick it up, or ask. No charge. A
couple of the places even did a load of
washing for us as well - no charge. And all
the tours, fishing trips, etc. - all
included. it was impossible to spend money!

Then, after a day in Darwin, we had to go to
the airport and return to "normality". All
direct
Darwin to Melbourne flights are
middle-of-the-night; we got to the airport
soon after midnight and it was buzzing!
There were more people there than we had
seen in the city centre.
We got onto the plane. A full plane,
they said; but when the door closed the row
of three seats across from me were all
empty! I asked the cabin crew and they had
no objection to my moving there;so I was
able to get a bit of sleep. Not much, but a
bit.
We landed at 7am, and stayed up till
8pm - though we both felt quite zonked. And
we unpacked - sort of, because it occurred
to us that in a bit over two weeks' time we
were going off to Vietnam for two weeks. So
we started packing for that as we unpacked
from Arnhem Land.
