We have just returned from a trip to
Tasmania - booked nearly a year ago, because
to take big vehicles like the White House on
the Spirit of Tasmania, that's how far ahead
you need to book. For cars, easy; but
motorhomes and caravans, quite restricted.
And it has been very good; we ended up
spending only one night in a caravan park,
seven nights in national park camping areas,
and the rest in free camping areas -
official or unofficial. Many of them have
been lovely spots which we've had to
ourselves.
(We used to feel the need to go to a caravan
park when we needed to refill with water, or
do the washing; but we've got better at
sourcing water, and using a laundromat is
often a better
option than a caravan park).
The motorhome gave us no trouble at all -
except for our managing to hit
(twice!) the same unknown obstacle,
probably a rock, though neither of us saw it
either time, with our step. This deformed it
/ jammed it badly, but with the help of our
friend Brian in Hobart, and his shed, it has
been resurrected.
We spent most of the time down the West
Coast and the Central Highlands, with a
little diversion over to the Tasman
Peninsula before visiting Brian and Vicki in
Hobart.

Most of our trips can be fairly spontaneous.
Booking the ferry meant this was planned -
way before we knew Alice was pregnant and
due this month. Luckily, she is still
pregnant and while eagerly awaiting no
longer feeling like a beached whale,
we are relieved to be home before she has
this baby.
We
have been to Tasmania enough times before to
be very relaxed about where we go, what we
see or do. Add the flexibility of traveling
in a self-contained vehicle and we have had
a lovely spontaneous Tasmanian
exploration. The only planned bits
were all highlights - a whiskey distillery
lunch and private tour, a jet boat trip
around Tasman Island which exposed us to the
Southern ocean in all it's glory and allowed
a close up view of the magnificent sea
cliffs and even a chance to see Rita, Rob
and Stephanie
before they completed their Tasmanian trip
and returned home. The rest has been a
chance to see more of the west coast and
central lake area up close.
We return to hot dry weather, hoping our
garden has survived but also pleased to be
warm again. The Tasmanian's may think it has
been hot (dry, certainly, but not hot) but
we beg to differ. All in all, a lovely
holiday.
